Man accused of shooting disgraced Hampton County attorney Alex Murdaugh under failed life insurance plan was terminated June 24 speak Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith disputed Murdaugh’s versions of events, saying he refused the lawyer’s request to shoot him and that they fought over the gun that fired once.

Murdaugh admitted to lying in September about the roadside shooting. He was also charged in November with conspiracy, false demand for payment and filing a false police report.

Murdaugh, who is imprisoned in Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Colombia, remains the only known person of interest in SLED’s investigation into the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. No one was arrested in the dead.

The family murders and disputed roadside shootings led to investigations that generated nearly 80 criminal charges against Murdaugh, many of which related to accusations that the now-suspended attorney stole millions of dollars from clients . He has also been named in nearly a dozen civil lawsuits.
